Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill

Ironic, critical, and picaresque, "The Threepenny Opera" is a play that has become a phenomenon in the European cultural space. Written by Bertolt Brecht, a multilateral and influential reformer of twentieth-century theater, after John Gay's satirical melodrama "The Beggar's Opera" (1728), the play captures, like the hypotext, the world of the marginalized: thieves, beggars, prostitutes and preserves original intrigue, but in a different context and exploring new meanings.

The music, composed by Kurt Weill, with lyrics written by Brecht, has an important role in the economy of the play. Revolutionary for its time, combining influences of jazz and German dance music, it gives a distinctive note and a special flavor, having both a recreational and a critical role. The songs of "The Threepenny Opera" enjoyed great popularity.

The text is for the first time staged at the Queen Marie Theater in the stage direction of Victor Ioan Frunză, a creator with a strong aesthetic program. The scenographic concept belongs to the artist Adriana Grand, who always surprises with the visual and referential complexity she brings on stage.

Also, involving almost all the actors of the Queen Marie Theater, but also musicians from Oradea - under the musical direction of Ovidiu Iloc, the show "The Threepenny Opera" is part of the register of macrostructures, which captivates not only the complexity of the world and the themes it develops, but also through the complex artistic vision, the development of forces, ingenuity and scenic mathematics.
