The Invasive Mr. Deepfake

Text taken from Family Magazine | author: Alexandru Jurcan

The snows of yesteryear are coming back, but the teenagers of yesteryear have dissipated in the labyrinth of inventions, taking advantage of scientific advances. Social networks, artificial intelligence. Goodbye, walks in nature, socializing under the sun! The virtual has won, like an evil drug. The reverse of focusing on the internet shows a pitiful tumble towards all kinds of dysfunctions. What does a necessary show mean, an explosive SOS? Exactly the premiere at the Regina Maria Theater in Oradea, that is awakening by Doru Vatavului, directed by Bobi Pricop. Assistant director: Mihai Gligan. A show dedicated to teenagers. Towards understanding, reorientation, awakening.

Amalia is a 16-year-old teenager, a student at a prestigious high school. She qualified for the Romanian Olympiad, and on the high school's page the reactions are diverse, culminating in her compromising image. Envy? Pure malice? Morbid unconsciousness? A carousel of verbal aggression, pigmented with vulgar words. Actor Sorin Ionescu appears on stage at the beginning, in a kind of explanatory prologue. Yes, we will witness an incendiary, extremely harsh show. We will understand that some teenagers are "monsters bigger than vulgar words".

The actors do not play on stage, they are in the hall, filmed live with phones, with cameras, and the spectators see the projections on a large screen. Like a live cinema, with a kind of metafilm, metatext, with interactions during the short breaks, like "have you ever heard of such a case?". Music/Videoart: iRonic Distors (Alin Sterian). Motion Graphic: Bogdan Țolea. Video programming: Constantin Șimon. Some actors play alongside their children. All the scores are generous, there is spontaneity, truthfulness, ease. The cast includes Anastasia Vicoveanu, Răzvan Vicoveanu, Robert Balint, Richard Balint, Sorin Ionescu, Filip Ionescu, Alexandru Rusu, Rebeca Rusu, Adela Lazăr, Alina Leonte, Dania Uifaluși, Benjamin Kendi. There are also special guests in the video appearances.

We see on screen the lives of teenagers on the internet. Harsh, vulgar, often cryptic, slang language. Bullying, nicknames, Englishisms at every turn, along with fashionable verbal tics ("balls", "gender"), along with "pervert jerk", "whore", plus uncontrolled outbursts in front of parents ("I've been jerking off since fifth grade!"). The invasive Mr. Deepfake is at home, dominating the spirits of teenagers. Anyone can be put up against the wall, unjustly defamed. Bad jokes, trends fake, sinister battles for like-ures. Will Amalia be able to withstand the pressures of the online environment? Will the (mechanical) discussions with the psychologist manage to eliminate shame, isolation, public stigmatization, threatened fragility? Gossip proliferates, enhancing the need for validation. The director has built an unusual show, "like a polyphony of digital voices and intimate confessions" (programme). A visceral show, which parents and students should see. It is an assumed X-ray, burdened with redemption, so that the last minutes of the show mean leaving the virtual and a concrete embrace, in a real world. Personally, I am part of the system, I work with students, with teenagers and I can say that the play does not exaggerate anything, it places tragic accents on dusty responsibilities, on bizarre reactions, inviting constructive reflections. Can you still get along with your own children? How do they think, what do they post, what… planet have they jumped to, burning the true spiritual stages? Is it only their fault that „different masks, the same piece” no longer fits? Because the world has chosen obscure paths. Evil prevails. Like a roller. Will peace become an anomaly in the history of mankind?
