An Enemy of the People – premiere of a debate show at the Great Hall

The "Iosif Vulcan" troupe of the Regina Maria Theater in Oradea presents on Sunday, November 24, 2024, from 7:00 PM, at the Great Hall, the premiere of the show "An Enemy of the People", adaptation by Thomas Ostermeier and Florian Borchmeyer after Henrik Ibsen, directed by Radu Iacoban.

The cast consists of: Alina Leonte (Katharina Stockmann), Richard Balint (Peter Stockmann), Răzvan Vicoveanu (Thomas Stockmann), Gabriela Codrea (Nina Aslaksen), Elvira Rîmbu (Marta Kill), Alin Stanciu (Hovstad) and Tudor Manea (Billing).

The artistic team is made up of: director Radu Iacoban, set designer Tudor Prodan, musician Aida Šošić and lighting designer Lucian Moga, the team being in their second collaboration, in the same formula, with the Regina Maria Theater, after the show "Creștini" by Lucas Hnath, from 2019, which then also received a nomination at the UNITER Awards Gala.

Dr. Stockmann, the idealistic physician of a provincial town, makes a shocking discovery: the baths that attract thousands of tourists are not, in fact, curative, but dangerous to health. In a world where truth conflicts with economic interests and community indifference, Stockmann becomes caught in a solitary struggle to expose reality.

This provocative play by Henrik Ibsen, reimagined in 2012 by Thomas Ostermeier and Florian Borchmeyer for the Schaubühne in Berlin and now directed by Radu Iacoban at the Regina Maria Theatre in Oradea, brings to the fore themes such as social responsibility, the courage to stand up for the truth and the consequences of individual actions. With the doctor's discoveries, conflicts arise between idealism and pragmatism, and the peace of the city is disturbed by scandal and controversy.

As Stockmann takes the risks of defending his principles, the audience is invited to reflect on their own choices and the price we are willing to pay for the truth. The show goes beyond the boundaries of the stage, involving the audience in a critical and provocative dialogue, as director Radu Iacoban states: “I believe that the adaptation made by Ostermeier and Borchmeyer manages to contemporaryize Ibsen’s text without affecting its narrative. And that is something very valuable and smart. The two authors manage to essentialize and accelerate the pace, transforming a slightly idealistic story into an occasion for a current and, I believe, very necessary debate, offering the audience the opportunity to be both a witness to a theatrical performance and an active participant in our story.”
