TAROM '71

Smaranda Nicolau | translation: Czvikker Katalin

Some stories are too unlikely to be fiction. In May 1971, Adalbert Moka hijacked a Tarom plane with all its passengers, co-pilot and telegraph operator and fled communist Romania. Falcons of the Fatherland retells his life story through fifteen memorable paintings, each captured at the exact moment when everything changes. Tender, disturbing, absurdly funny and surprisingly intimate, these images invite viewers to enter a true story, in which each frame raises a new question, and freedom proves much harder to achieve than escape.
