The Rocky Horror Show

by Richard O'Brien, translated by Peca Ștefan

What happens when "two otherwise completely ordinary and perfectly healthy young people" get lost on a rainy night and end up at the castle of an eccentric scientist, where nothing is what it seems, and social conventions are the first to disappear?
I see you shiver with antici...passion!

Brad and Janet, well-behaved, engaged, and perfectly integrated into the world of convention, are on their way to their former teacher's house when a car breakdown forces them to seek shelter in a secluded and sinister castle. There they meet the eccentric and seductive Dr. Frank-N-Furter, who is about to present his most spectacular creation: Rocky. Thus, what begins as an unusual night turns into an adventure they will never forget.

The Rocky Horror Show is much more than a musical. It is an explosion of rock'n'roll, eroticism, humor and self-assured kitsch, a celebration of excess and the freedom to be exactly who you want to be. Created by Richard O'Brien in 1973 and inspired by B-movies and sci-fi horror, the show transforms pop culture clichés into a delirious universe where genres, identities and rules mix without a trace of modesty. With extravagant costumes, unforgettable characters and an iconic music, The Rocky Horror Show it does not aim to be "in good taste". On the contrary, it assumes excess and transforms it into artistic language. It laughs at conventions precisely to undermine them and invites us to look with more freedom at everything that society teaches us that we should hide.

More than fifty years after its premiere, The Rocky Horror Show continues to be a show about the pleasure of breaking the rules, taking the audience out of the spectator role and making them part of the game. Because, in the universe of Frank-N-Furter, maybe the question isn't who you are, but how free you're willing to be.

The Rocky Horror Show is a masterpiece of the musical genre and, like any masterpiece, it crosses, with the grace of a musical, the eras and addresses each generation of spectators, their sensibilities. It depends on us, as creators, how well we tell the story, so that it is also interesting for today's audience, all the more so since, essentially, the themes have remained the same. Among the themes of this musical, the most important seem to me to be the theme of love, the human need for love, to give love and to be loved, and the need for freedom. You can only love fully in freedom, when, in a free world, which can understand you, you find your true self, your true personality and authenticity, beyond any taboo that society is careful to impose on us. And yes, the addressing, it seems, in this era, is even more direct than in the '70s, it's even more provocative, because it seems that the audience is no longer patient, besieged by so much information around. Then, this type of convention, also specific to the musical, but especially to this title: The Rocky Horror Show, it's a very direct one. It's a direct relationship that the actors have live with the audience and that seems very powerful to me and can bring the audience into the story immediately, in a second. – Razvan Mazilu
