Since its first representations in Saint-Petersburg and Moscow, “A Marriage Proposal” or simply, “The Proposal” has met a tremendous success, quickly becoming popular in cities all over Russia. In this play, Chekov describes the very funny courtyard of Lomov, who wants to marry the daughter of his neighbor.
The future grooms to be are fighting before he made the proposal, during the proposal and after she agrees to marry him. They tend to fight every time they see each other. Eventually, the father calls the final confrontation “the beginning of a happy marriage” and, although he has doubts about the couple’s resistance in time, he wishes them to have a happy life together.
