Queen Marie Theater Oradea

Artistic director

Date and place of birth: 10.12.1961, Oradea

Studies: Institute of Theatre and Cinematography "ILCaragiale" Bucharest, theatre directing department

Son of critic Dumitru Chirilă and actress Anca Miere Chirilă.

He worked in Cluj, both at the National Theatre and as a professor at the Actor's Art Department. He collaborated with the Oradea State Theatre (as a temporary employee) in the 1991/1992 season, successfully staging the plays "Ivanca" (an absolute premiere), a play awarded the Second Prize at the 8th edition of the Oradea Short Theatre Week (1992). The critic Alice Georgescu praised the play, but Victor Parhon denied that Lucian Blaga's play had any theatrical virtues. Mircea Morariu wrote in his review that the director "succeeded in creating rich and plastic theatrical images" and that "he usefully dissociates the plane of reality from that of the imagination agreed upon by fantasies..." A controversial show, but one in which Tudor Chirilă collaborated very well with the performers, all of whom were otherwise good, in the show: Ion Mâinea, Oana Mereuţă, Dorin Presecan, Doru Fîrte, Daniel Vulcu, etc.

The show "The Storm" was unfortunately not a success, neither with the public nor with the press. Lacking, as critic Mircea Ghiţulescu wrote, "the fabulous, determining element", the show also had a set (Mihai Ciupe) "rigid, stubborn in its own immobility". Mircea Morariu nevertheless appreciates the staging as "balanced, seriously conceived, but not daring". The highlighted actors are: Ion Mâinea, Oana Mereuţă, Daniel Vulcu, Nicolae Barosan, Ion Abrudan, Eugen Ţugulea, Doru Fîrte.

In 1997, he staged the show "Pseudolus". The chronicler Mircea Morariu noted the director's idea of treating Plautus in a post-modern key. It was observed – quite rightly, by the way – that the show is made up of "self-elaborated photograms", but that it failed to "remove theatricality from under the sign of gratuitousness", quite long, and had a few confusing moments, some arising from the very plot of Plautian comedy. But, the worst thing is that it was humorless, the director insufficiently exploiting the situations, admittedly not too numerous, from which moments of laughter could have been created. Otherwise, the show was of average value, being selected for the Sfântu Gheorghe Theatre-Workshop Festival.

Currently, Tudor Chirilă is employed at Romanian Television Bucharest.
