Queen Marie Theater Oradea

Actor

Date and place of birth: 29.03.1938, Oradea

Studies: Institute of Theatrical and Cinematographic Art "ILCaragiale" Bucharest, 1961

A student of the great actress Dina Cocea, a colleague, among others, of Gheorghe Dinică, Marin Moraru and Bihorian Ion Martin (from Sântandrei), he came, after his assignment, to the theater in his hometown, which he only left for three months until his retirement, in an attempt to escape to Braşov.

Living under the sign "this can only happen to him", he always overcame adversities, slowly and surely becoming one of the basic people of the collective. The over two hundred roles, most of them main ones, diverse in genre and scope, formed a mature, serious, profound actor. A good reciter, he passed, as a passenger, like most "from the province", also by Buftea, and he proved to be a good leader of the "Iosif Vulcan" troupe, when, for three years, he was its director.

In the institute, in addition to the performances of his class, he also collaborated with the teachers of the other classes, Ion Finteșteanu, Moni Ghelerter or Ion Cojar. It is clear that from their masters, the future actors learned not only the profession, but also other extremely important things for an artist, such as dress code, discipline, exigency, keeping in shape, impeccable diction, culture, behavior...

Ion Abrudan is one of the few actors who debuted at the Oradea State Theater and remained here, in his case, in his hometown, until his retirement. Almost fifty years. He continues to collaborate with the institution, playing in several shows, and at the Studio Hall, together with another veteran of the Theater, Eugen Ţugulea (also present here, since his debut, in 1955!) – together they made a beautiful Chekhov coupé show, in which Ion Abrudan interprets several well-known roles with aplomb and talent and in which many actors of all nationalities have stood out, over the years, in the show "On the Harmful Effect of Tobacco" or in "Swan Song".

The tall, thin, expressive young man debuted in roles of young romantics or, on the contrary, hardworking and capable workers or peasants, Romanians, Soviets or "from socialist countries", characters who "behaved" in the fifties-seventies: Dinu - "It seems romantic to me" by Radu Cosaşu, Vornicelul - "The Stolen Bridegroom" by Ştefan Haralamb and Stela Neagu, the Electrician - "A Slice of the Moon" by Aurel Storin, Radu - "A Girl's Devil" by Nicolae Damaschin.

Being appreciated for his diligence, devotion, and talent, he was then cast in several leading or large-scale roles: Lysander (a role in which he brought a lot of poetry) in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by William Shakespeare, Eliso (with humor and aplomb) in "The Caprices of Belisa" by Lope de Vega, Christy Dudgeon (sober, rigorous) in "The Devil's Disciple" by GBShaw, Peregrine (perfectly integrated into the director's vision) in "Volpone" by Ben Jonson, Louis (as tough as it needs to be) in "A View from the Bridge" by Arthur Miller.

An actor loved and appreciated by the young director Alexandru Colpacci, Ion Abrudan had, throughout the years they worked together (1970-1981) and after 1990, roles of great importance, leading roles, in valuable performances, which obviously contributed to his professional development.

It can also be noted that the most interesting, most appealing roles, especially comedies, but not only, were entrusted to picturesque, tasty characters, whose stage destiny was brilliantly highlighted by the performer. Let us remember Aristidis, likable and unlucky ("The Little Pharisees" by Dimitris Psatas), Keefer ("The Revolt on the Dog" by Herman Wouk), the Geometer ("The Trojan War Will Not Take Place" by Jean Giraudoux), Todoruţ Frenţiu ("Is Life Like a Wagon?" by Paul Everac), Urecheatu ("A Kidney Stone" by Paul Everac), Murphy ("The Bomb of the Day" by Jozef Hen), the Lawyer ("The Trial of Adam and Eve" by Rudi Strahl), as well as the fickle husband, put to hard trials and entanglements with beautiful ladies and young ladies (Hugh Preston in the show "A Farewell Weekend" by Marc Sauvajon).

In the performances signed by Alexandru Colpacci, we encounter an actor who discovers new facets of his talent with each role entrusted to him – in the role of the Minister of Intimate Feelings, he emphasized the ridiculousness of the character in the performance "The Naked King" by Evgheni Svarţ. There was a cunning, paradoxical and sympathetic Oleg Baian, although very dangerous in the excellent show "Ploşniţa" by Vladimir Mayakovsky, he was fascinating in Archidamus ("A Winter's Tale" by William Shakespeare), moving in Pollak from the very good show, but played too little ("Spre stele" by Leonid Andreev), then there was the symbolic Băşat - in remarkable tandem with Ion Mâinea (Căşină) from the exceptional show "Balconul" by DRPopescu, "a tough show, ... in which fundamental and uncomfortable truths were shouted out loud", and towards the end of their collaboration, until the revolution of 1989, the surprising Nandi from the show "Astă-seră se improvizaţă" by Luigi Pirandello, a show attesting to an enviable homogeneity of the troupe (ATM Award, 1978). After 1990, when director Alexandru Colpacci returned from Paris to collaborate with the Oradea troupe, Ion Abrudan created a major creation (The Philharmonic Director – delicious and irresistibly funny) in the show "The Slaughterhouse" by Slawomir Mrožek.

Ion Abrudan was also cast by directors Ştefan Farkas and Nicoleta Toia – out of conviction, in roles of great responsibility, which he always fulfilled with brilliance: Beppe, a likable troublemaker in "The Quarrels of Chioggia" by Carlo Goldoni, a Meter Reader (in the play with the same title by Paul Everac), a typical figure of a rigid and "locked-in" official.

Under the guidance of director Sergiu Savin, Ion Abrudan played several memorable roles in performances appreciated by critics and the public alike. Let us mention just a few: the delightful Gravedigger in "The Seventh Commandment" by Dario Fo, Paris in "Rhesos" by Euripides or Vladuleasa in the remarkable performance "The Fan House" by Marin Sorescu (the extremely difficult play gave him the opportunity to perform a performance that we could call "dissident", after the scandal that was caused all the way to the Central Committee). The chronicler Dumitru Chirilă characterized him as follows: "the subtlety of the stage expression perfectly adapts to the content, enhancing it and giving it meaning".

Although he admits that as an actor he definitely needs a director to build his characters in accordance with the director's vision, we note on the one hand, the actor's interest in directing (he has signed numerous directorial assistantships with personalities such as Ion Olteanu, Ion Lucian, Nicoleta Toia, Zoe Anghel Stanca, Ion Ciubotaru). And, last but not least, his pleasure and talent as a reciter, the actor not missing from the poetry performances of Mihai Eminescu, Nicolae Labiş, Mircea Dinescu, Alexandru Andriţoiu, etc.
