The witty comedy written by Brandon Thomas brings to the fore the misadventures of a group of Oxford students, prone to pranks and youthful games and driven by the calls of love. The triggering event is the visit of Charles' aunt, Donna Lucia d'Alvadorez from Brazil, a wealthy widow whom the nephew has never met. Her visit is a good opportunity for Charles and his friend, Jack, to declare their love for Annie and Kitty, respectively, who are invited to meet the mysterious aunt. Lord Fancourt Babberly (Babbs), a colleague of theirs, is also invited to the reunion, to keep the aunt company while Charles and Jack make their feelings for the young girls known.

Auntie's delay leads to a series of hilarious complications, the first of which is Babbs' disguise and presentation under the false identity of Donna Lucia. When she finally arrives, she finds that someone has taken her place and, in order to find out more, introduces herself as Mrs. Beverly-Smythe, a poor widow. Jack-Kitty and Charles-Annie are joined by two other couples who must solve the problem of identity before they can find fulfillment: Babbs-Ella and Donna Lucia-Sir Francis (Jack's father).

And as befits a self-respecting farce, everything ends well, demonstrating that love, whether newly born or rediscovered, can be the prerogative of all ages...
