Macbeth (1967)

by William Shakespeare
Translation: Florian Nicolau

Artistic director: Ion Deloreanu
Scenography: architect Vladimir Popov
Fencing Master: A.Pelegrini
Musical illustration: Nicolae Neagoe
Premiere date: May 27, 1967

The shortest of Shakespeare's tragedies, but one of his most complex creations, "Macbeth" illustrates, using various techniques, including means of the fantastic, the disastrous consequences of immeasurable ambition and the thirst for power.

The predictions of three witches, according to which General Macbeth will become "than of Cawdor" and then the king of Scotland himself, ignite in Macbeth's soul the desire to turn them into reality, overcoming all obstacles and even resorting to murder. Next to him is Lady Macbeth, who maintains and enhances her husband's ambition at every moment, from winning the throne to its sudden loss. Betrayals, assassinations, the horror of having blood on his hands, but also their positive reverse - nobility, the desire for justice and strength of character are all depicted in a play that is extremely played in the world, in which political issues are intertwined with ethical ones. Macbeth's character has become almost a legend over time, being synonymous with the renunciation of humanity in exchange for absolute power.
