Michael the Brave. The Monks

Historical drama in three acts by Octav Dessila

Artistic director: Ion Deloreanu
Scenography: Eliza Popescu
Premiere date: November 20, 1965

„"Mihai Viteazul. Călugăreni" continued the program, for a time unique in the Romanian theatrical landscape, of cultivating the historical play. "Călugăreni" is part of the "Mihai Viteazul" trilogy, followed by "Atotbiruitorul" and "Turda". The focus on the historical figure of the Romanian ruler is explained by the author Octav Dessila as follows: "The most representative Romanian figure was missing from the local dramaturgy... Călugăreni, in the historical stock market of universal values, is equivalent to Thermopylae, to Austerlitz. All battles concluding historical phases." Benefiting from a very large cast, the play captures the events that took place before the Battle of Călugăreni, the famous battle and the strategic retreat of Michael the Brave after the victory.
