Queen Marie Theater Oradea

Savin, Sergiu (Leuciuc, Silviu)

Artistic director

Date and place of birth: 06.11.1941, Horodnicul de Sus

Studies: Institute of Theater and Cinematography "ILCaragiale" Bucharest, 1970, class of Prof. Ion Olteanu

Sergiu Savin made his debut at the National Theatre in Iaşi, after which he worked for four years (1970-1974) at the National Theatre in Timişoara. From 1974 to 1996, he signed numerous performances at the State Theatre in Oradea, both as a director and as a set designer. In fact, his remarkable talent for painting also materialized in his later years, when the artist gave up the theatre and dedicated himself to painting icons on wood.

A complex artist, therefore, of undeniable sensitivity, Sergiu Savin distinguished himself through originality, but not at any price: a kind of originality stemming from the need to express himself freely, in accordance with his own sensitivity, thinking, rigor, cultural universe and conception of life. For this reason, the artist always opted for certain texts, signing personal stage versions of the plays he staged. He collaborated exemplary, among others, with Romanian playwrights: Aurel Gh. Ardeleanu ("Appassionata"), DRPopescu ("Sleeping on a Snake"), Marin Sorescu ("The Fan House"), Mircea Bradu ("The Return of the Wasteful Father" and "The Cursed Village"), etc., working on the texts, obviously, in the sense of improving them, both as a problematic and as a theatrical technique. Concerned with discovering new plays, the director has signed several shows in absolute or national premiere: "The Trevi Fountain" by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, "The Dictator" by Al. Kiriţescu, "Rhesos" by Euripides, "The Anniversary" by Harold Pinter, etc.

The show "Anniversary" by Harold Pinter received superlative praise, signed by valuable critics: "Director Sergiu Savin, intelligent and imaginative, gave the show two structures: one of atmosphere and the other of culture." (Al.Andriţoiu); "The show attests to the full professional maturity of Sergiu Savin, who has reached a stage of confirming an aesthetic program followed consistently." (Mircea Morariu)

There were no fewer words of praise for the performance "The Fan House" by Marin Sorescu: "The director has reached that point in evolution where the subtlety of the stage expression - cultivated with reverence and refinement - perfectly molds itself to the content, enhancing it and giving it meaning." (Dumitru Chirilă); "The director has resorted to the plasticization of the title metaphor, so that the performance unfolds like a refined parade of images." (Doina Modola). A performance that, by the way, was subject to harsh censorship and unfair treatment, but in accordance with the "actions" of communist propaganda by ideological services. One of the admirable performances, in which actors Cristina Şchiopu and Ion Mâinea, led and guided carefully and inspired by the director, simply shone.

A special interest of the director for poetry led to the creation of remarkable poetry and music performances, dedicated to Eminescu, Marin Sorescu, Ana Blandiana, Mircea Dinescu, Ştefan Augustin Doinaş. The performances, in the case of living poets, took place in their presence and, each time, in settings designed by the director in full accordance with the message of the group of poems, embellished with refined, elegant, carefully elaborated original music.

Currently, Sergiu Savin paints icons on wood. There are many art critics who claim that his icons have a special light that, of course, comes from his soul.
