Queen Marie Theater Oradea

Actor

Date and place of birth: 11.11.1922, Calvaser, Sibiu area

Studies: Institute of Theater Arts

Nicolae Toma studied in Blaj, recognized as one of the traditional cultural cities in Transylvania: a thorough, serious school, which left its mark on the future actor's demeanor.

He took the exam at the Conservatory, guided by the music teacher, for the simple reason that he had a beautiful voice. A great surprise for him – later it became a precious memory – was the meeting, as a student, with the great actor Zaharia Bârsan, who, listening to him recite a poem by George Coşbuc, praised him, recognizing that he had talent.

His prediction came true exactly: Nicolae Toma became the number one actor of the Oradea troupe. Asked what qualities an actor should have, he replied: to have talent, obviously, to insist on cultivating it, to be sensitive, not to be selfish; to think, to be honest, to have personality. And, yes, to read a lot.

Nicolae Toma played an enormous amount of roles: over a thousand performances in almost one hundred and fifty premieres. Most of them were leading roles. Since 1957/1958, his artistic record includes two or three episodic roles, "warm-up", so to speak (Boat in "Gara mică" by Dan Tărchilă, Second Sentinel in "Liubov Iarovaia" by K. Treniov, Second Civil Servant in "Mielul turbat" by Aurel Baranga, Interpretul unui rolisor in the cabaret show "Sorcova vevselă"). Very soon, he attracted the attention of directors Radu Penciulescu, Valeriu Moisescu, Dan Alecsandrescu, Ion Deloreanu, then, later, Alexandru Colpacci, Sergiu Savin, Alexandru Darie, Victor Ioan Frunză and others.

He was an Uncle Vanea of great sensitivity, in a well-constructed, solid show. In "The Forest" by N. Ostrovski (Vosminbratov) he played alongside talented colleagues such as Maud Mary, Dorel Urlăţeanu, Ricardo Colberti. His wife, Simona, also played the role of the young Axiuşa in the show, whom he wanted to take... as his wife. Directed by Sanda Manu, in the show "Romulus the Great" by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, he played the role of Achille. Guided by Marietta Sadova, a valuable director-pedagogue, in the show "Tartuffe" by Molière, the chronicler notes that his Orgon "an eminently ridiculous guy, a generator of enormous humor", this role "being one of the most successful in his long career".

For Alexandru Colpacci, Toma Nicolae was the favorite actor, he cast him in several roles of great scope, roles of overwhelming importance for the success of the shows: in "The Disappearance of Galy Gay" by Bertolt Brecht he was Galy Gay, a simple, naive man, with a dazed look, lost, easy to manipulate. The chronicler noted "The nuanced interpretation, punctuated with humor". In "The Naked King" by Evgheni Şvarţ he was... The King - His interpretation is recorded in a chronicle as a "brilliant creation". In the performances "Tsar Ivan Changes His Job" by Mikhail Bulgakov and "Tonight He Improvises" by Luigi Pirandello, he performed the main roles exceptionally; in the double role of Bunşa - Tsar Ivan he found the right means to create two radically different personalities. He was, in the show "Apus de soare" by B.Şt.Delavrancea, directed by Nicoleta Toia – a very special Ştefan: "gentle, full of humanity, with natural reactions". Alexandru Darie loved him very much and cast him in all his shows, counting on his bonhomie, discipline, talent, authenticity, seriousness and his humor of a special, Transylvanian type. He played important roles in "Amadeus" by Peter Shaffer (Venticello), in "Zece hohote de răs" by Tudor Popescu – the moments with him were exceptional –, in "Porţile" by Mihai Săulescu, he was a strange, disturbing Guard. In "Jolly Joker" by Tudor Popescu, the character Tudor received applause on the open stage. In Alfred Doolittle ("Pygmalion" by GBShaw) he made an exemplary creation, giving the character a personal touch. He had a kind of wise sadness, he aroused laughter from the moment he entered the room.

An exemplary actor, that's what Nicolae Toma was.
