Vanea lives with her niece, Sonia, on an estate in the country. Together, they not only manage the estate, but have also taken over some of the work that ensures the income of the estate and maintains the luxurious life of Sonia's father, university professor Serebreacov, the embodiment of cold and selfish intellectualism. When he, accompanied by his young and beautiful wife, Elena Andreevna, arrives at the estate, everyone's lives are turned upside down. Vanea and Mikhail Astrov, an idealistic doctor, fall in love with Elena, who rejects their advances. Sonia is in love with Astrov in turn, but without hope. Serebreacov's intention to sell the estate to live in the city arouses the anger of Vanea, who accuses him of selfishness and ungratefulness, even shooting him with a gun, without hurting him. Serebreacov and Elena leave, leaving Vanea and Sonia sad and alone, but adopting different attitudes in the face of unhappiness: while Vanea, taking stock of an empty life, is haunted by the thought of suicide, Sonia remains tonic and optimistic. The story of banal lives, of characters who pass by happiness...
