…ESCU

by Tudor Mușatescu, directed by Claudiu Goga

"Politics is like fashion! It evolves, it changes, it pretends. Fidelity in politics is nothing but an endless series of adulteries!" says the main character in …I am afraid. to justify his political career. Tudor Mușatescu wrote his play in 1933, a year after Titanic Waltz, but its heroes seem like modern-day people.

The children of Spirache Necșulescu, the petty official from Titanic Waltz, winning the election because he says, "Don't vote for me!", looks nothing like their father.

Miza, the eldest daughter, is "the wife of a general", the other daughter, Gena, is the wife of "a court president". And Decebal is... a politician. A demagogue, greasy, unscrupulous, he would do anything to become a deputy. He has done enough, as he serenely tells his father-in-law:

«NEARBY (decided to settle down "once and for all"): Didn't you make me a liberal when I was a conservative?
DECEBAL: Because the interests of the state required that my family be, at that moment, liberal.
LANGADA: But why did you make me a peasant when I was a wealthy man?
DECEBAL: Because, in this whole country, we couldn't be the only ones in opposition, when everyone was in power.
LANGADA: Yes… but you see that you changed parties and I made a fool of myself. That!… I can’t say a word anymore. Not at the café, not at the club… nowhere. My whole life as a conservative, everyone called me nothing but „Iorgule’s bitch”. Now – since you entered the family and confused me with the new political currents, – when people call me „rat”, sometimes „grill”, sometimes „technician” (…)»

The above lines sound familiar to today's viewer, as if nothing has changed in Romania in a hundred years. With a talent equal to his master Caragiale, Mușatescu makes …I am afraid. a satirical x-ray of political mores, with an amazing… foreboding talent.

Blackmail, a bit of erotic flirtation, just enough to spice up political life, a little fool's luck are the tasty ingredients of the play.
And in the end, because the socialist turned into a peasant again, but his patience didn't "give up", Decebal Necșulescu, undefeated, decides to create his own party.

What do you say? If you read last year's newspapers, don't you find the example clearly before your eyes?
…I am afraid. it's not just a period piece, with its old and good scent, but an astonishing parable of present-day Romania...
