The great magic

by Eduardo De Filippo
Translation: Horia Gârbea

Artistic direction: Alexandru Colpacci
Scenography: Vioara Bara
Musical illustration: Delia Şerban
With the participation of illusionist Eduard Maliţa
Premiere date: 06.02.2011

The song "La Grande Magia" takes us into the world of illusion, a confusing game in which reality loses its ordering meaning, acquiring new and multiple valences.

In the Hotel Metropol on the Italian Riviera, Otto Marvuglio, a traveling magician, performs a trick by which Marta, the wife of Calogero di Spelta, disappears without a trace. In reality, Marta takes advantage of this stratagem to run away with her lover to Venice, and the magician will cover up the adultery by hiding the reality under the guise of illusion. What is left for the deceived husband to do? Accept the truth or be convinced that his wife is really the victim of magic and that at some point she will return, unchanged?

"With "La Grande Magia" I wanted to say that life is a game and that this game needs to be supported by illusion, which, in turn, must be fueled by faith; I also wanted to say that each destiny intertwines with the thread of other destinies in an eternal game: a great game of which we are only allowed to discover some insignificant details." (Eduardo de Filippo, 1949)
