JANUARY PREMIERE: THE AUDITION
The Regina Maria Theater invites you on Sunday, January 31, from 7:00 PM, at the Great Hall, to enjoy the first premiere of 2016, "The Audition", by Alexandr Galin, directed by Mircea Cornişteanu.
Alexandr Galin is one of the most famous playwrights in Russia, with his plays performed in over two hundred theaters across the country, as well as in the most renowned theaters in Europe and Asia. The play “The Audition” was written as a result of a real experience that the author witnessed in the mid-1990s, immediately after the fall of the Soviet Union, a historical moment characterized by social instability and poverty, in which the country’s borders opened to Asian investors looking for labor, most often for compromising positions. Galin, called by a set designer friend, is urgently called to a downright burlesque casting, initiated by a group of Japanese investors who wanted to recruit young women to work in Japan. Somewhere in the back of the room, however, he glimpsed a group of women who were rejected because… they were not young.
The play, based on this incident, tells the story of six women who are seduced by the mirage of a better life abroad and participate in a casting call held by a prestigious Japanese company, which offers attractive jobs in the showbiz field in Singapore. All talented women, endowed with artistic skills, especially for dancing and vocal performance, are invited to audition. However, what is not mentioned in the newspaper advertisement is the fact that only young women are eligible and without any obligation. Of the six protagonists, only two meet these requirements, but the perseverance with which they support their cause forces the Japanese to accept them for the casting call. It remains to be seen, however, whether they will pass the competition successfully.
Even though it starts from a tragic background, "The Audition" combines this tragedy with comedy. The characters are funny and dynamic, and the situation is downright hilarious, especially since some of the women don't even understand what this attractive job in showbiz actually entails. The show, in addition to the balanced combination of tragedy and comedy, also attracts with the topicality of the subject, applied especially to post-communist countries, which faced the same problems after the fall of the regime.
The cast includes the beloved actors: Ioana Dragoş Gajdo, Gabriela Codrea, Lucia Rogoz, Anda Tămăşanu, Georgia Căprărin, Denisa Vlad, Andrei Sabău, George Dometi, Cprian Vultur, Alexandru Rusu and Sebastian Lupu.
