MIGUEL DE CERVANTES' BIRTHDAY
Today, September 29, marks more than 400 years since the birth of the writer Miguel de Cervantes, a Spanish novelist, poet and playwright, considered the symbol of Spanish literature. His notoriety is primarily due to the novel "El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha", one of the masterpieces of universal literature, considered by some critics to be the first modern novel.
The novel's protagonists, Don Quixote de La Mancha and Sancho Panza, have become two of the most famous figures in the literary world over time, this fame also due to their widespread representation in theater and film.
The story of the knight-errant and his faithful squire was also the inspiration for one of Broadway's most remarkable musicals, Man of La Mancha, an original production written by Dale Wasserman, with music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion. It first opened on Broadway in 1965, and was a huge success, running for over 2,300 performances; it won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
The year 2015 is an important one in the history of this musical, as it marks the 50th anniversary of the first performance of the show, which is why Don Quixote also landed on the stage of the Oradea theater this fall. The premiere of the production directed by a master of the musical, the Hungarian director György Korcsmáros, took place on Sunday, September 27, at 7 p.m. at the Great Hall of the Oradea Theater, and the Oradea audience applauded the performance for minutes, emotion floating in the air.
The Regina Maria Theater pays tribute to the writer Miguel de Cervantes through the show "The Man of La Mancha", which will be performed on Friday, October 16, at 7:00 PM, in the Great Hall.
