A new comedy at the Regina Maria Theatre: THE LIEUTENANT OF INISHMORE
The Regina Maria Theatre is pleased to announceÞthe premiere of the show "The Lieutenant of Inishmore" by Martin McDonagh, translated by Bogdan Budeș, directed by Ovidiu Caița, which will take place on Saturday, March 11, at 7:00 PM, at the Great Hall.
The play was first staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company at The Other Place, Stratford-upon-Avon in 2001 and is among the most successful texts written by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh, one of the most acclaimed contemporary European playwrights.
Martin McDonagh is known for his absurd, violent, dark humor, specific to the theatrical style in-yer-face whose representative he is. His texts have brought him numerous awards, including two Golden Globes for Best Original Screenplay the first in 2018 for "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" (original title: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), and the second this year, for "The Banshees of Inisherin", a film that has two more Golden Globes under its belt, and nine nominations for the 2023 Oscars.
Regarding the song "„The Lieutenant of Inishmore”", in 2003 it won the Olivier Award for "Best New Comedy", in 2006 it received a Tony Award nomination For the best piece, and in 2014 it was ranked in The Daily Telegraph as one of the 15 best plays ever written.
The show is a black comedy in which everything is played out in the extreme and that explores themes such as violence, terrorism and the consequences of extremism. Through humor and satire, it brings a commentary on the absurdity of political violence and the people who are willing to cross moral, legal and logical limits alike to protect their ideology, even if it is only personal.
Set in Ireland during the 1990s, the show follows Padraic, a ruthless terrorist of the Irish National Liberation Army (INLA), who returns to his hometown to resolve a family situation that requires immediate intervention. Following this trigger, both he and the others involved enter a vicious cycle of revenge that transforms small, otherwise undramatic events into an absurd movement of extreme vigilantism.
„"The Lieutenant of Inishmore" is an ingenious and provocative show that explores complex themes with humor and insight, managing to touch on and highlight deep underpinnings of human nature.
The stage direction of the show belongs to the director. Ovidiu Caița, which is not in Oradea for the first time, having already managed to capture the attention of the Oradea audience with the three shows staged on the stage of the Regina Maria Theater: "Biloxi Blues" (2011) and "Seara de ajun" (2015), both awarded in the Competition section of the Oradea International Theater Festival, and "Sufocare sau Journalul unui suicigaș cronic" (2018).
The show's decor is created by the Oradea set designer Oana Cernea, who meets again with director Ovidiu Caița in this formula after they worked together on shows staged both at the Regina Maria Theater and at other theaters in the country.
The cast includes the following actors: Richard Balint, Eugen Neag, Alin Stanciu, Giorgiana Coman, Tudor Manea, Pavel Sîrghi, Ciprian Ciuciu, Răzvan Vicoveanu
The show is not recommended for people under 14 years old!
