The text was developed in 2002 within the Cape Cod Theatre Project, having its world premiere in 2004, at the Portland Stage Company (Maine), and is to date one of the most staged texts in high school theater productions in the United States.
The text pans over a place that doesn't exist on the map. A small town, with people like everywhere else. Here we find a group of inhabitants who almost form a community, but not quite. Like everywhere else, some know each other, others not so much. In such an isolated, remote place, as if somewhere at the end of the world, the ordinary is shaken by people's feelings that are unleashed and come to the surface, manifesting themselves in the form of a ceaseless search for the acute need for closeness, for belonging. A longing that springs from and is fueled by their love, melancholy, loneliness or hope. A set of stories about the attachment, suffering and disappointment that we feel in interactions with others, in our attempts to be together.
John Cariani is an actor and playwright. After graduating from Amherst College, he spent the next three years as an acting intern at the now-defunct StageWest Theatre in Springfield, Massachusetts. He then moved to New York City, where he appeared in several plays, films, and television productions. In 2004, he made his Broadway debut in the musical ???????? ?? ????????̦, playing the role of Motel, for which he received a Tony Award nomination.
The stage direction of the show is signed by Andi Gherghe, director, actor of the National Theatre of Târgu Mureș – "Liviu Rebreanu" Company, playwright and cultural manager. In Oradea he also staged the shows Poveste din Transilvania, Vă plac bananele, tovarăși? and Social Acceptabil, all three at Studio Act.
The scenography is made by Oana Cernea, set designer of the Regina Maria Theater since 2004, who has worked with both the "Iosif Vulcan" troupe and the Arcadia troupe.
The lighting design is signed by Cristian Niculescu, who is originally an actor, pursuing a Master's degree in Lighting Design, Sound Design and Multimedia from the National University of Theater and Cinematography "IL Caragiale". He has worked with directors such as Radu Afrim, Theodor-Cristian Popescu, Alexandru Dabija or Răzvan Mazilu.
