THE BEAR and MARRIAGE PROPOSAL

by AP Chekhov

How long does it take for two passionate young people to fall in love with each other?

Subtitled "a farce in one act", the play "The Bear" reveals in a concentrated, comical-ironic way an essential part of human nature, suggesting how close anger and passion sometimes are. Officer Smirnov and landlady Popova come into conflict and argue so hard that they challenge each other to a duel. But the path from hatred to love is a very short one!

Distribution:
Elena Ivanovna Popova, landlady, a plump widow: Mihaela Gherdan
Grigori Stepanovich Smirnov, landowner, still young: Şerban Borda
Lucika, Elena Ivanovna's maid: Corina Cernea

„"A Marriage Proposal" follows the play "The Bear", using approximately the same cast and similar directorial elements. The story itself naturally follows the one begun in "The Bear". Thus, if in the previous play two young people imperceptibly move from conflict and hatred to passionate love, in "A Marriage Proposal" things are taken even further. AP Chekhov captures the commendable initiative of Ivan Vasilievich Lomov to marry his neighbor's daughter.

But far from the romance and harmony that should govern such a unique moment, the two potential grooms argue fiercely for ridiculous reasons. The clash of their strong personalities, the suitor's bouts of hypochondria, the bride's father's confusion and his desperate attempts to smooth over the two young men's outbursts create a delicious situation comedy.

Ivan Vasilievich Lomov: Serban Borda
