In a small Soviet town, Dr. Talanov's house is occupied by the German army in the winter of 1941-1942. While the doctor's daughter is involved in the fight against the Allies, Talanov's only son, Feodor, returns home after three years in prison. As his unexpected reappearance coincides with the German invasion, his fellow citizens receive him with somewhat justified distrust. He is rehabilitated when he assumes the false identity of Kolesnikov, the leader of a group of partisans. Feodor is hanged, but his sacrifice allows the real Kolesnikov to escape, while everything portends an imminent reversal of the situation on the front in favor of the Russians.
