Play Strindberg

by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, based on "Dance of Death" by August Strindberg
Translation: Nicolae Reiter

Artistic director: Otto Szombati Gille
Scenography: Eliza Popescu
Musical and piano illustration: Gheorghe Hausmann
Premiere date: September 28, 1974

For the writing of the play "Play Strindberg", Friedrich Dürrenmatt confesses that he took the plot and the fundamental theatrical idea from the play "Dance of Death" by August Strindberg. From the title, therefore, an intertextual relationship is established with the Swedish playwright's play, which depicts the stormy clash between two beings united by marriage, but who, through violence and mutual hatred, end up destroying each other. Starting from this, Dürrenmatt creates an original play: Strindberg's melodrama is transformed into a witty and humorous black comedy, a comic image of a long and unhappy marriage between an officer and an actress without talent.
