WORLD THEATRE DAY – NATIONAL CAMPAIGN UNITER – ARTISTS FOR ARTISTS

World Theatre Day – March 27

UNITER National Campaign – Artists for Artists

As every year, the Regina Maria Theater responds to the National Campaign launched by UNITER - "Artists for Artists", so this year, on the occasion of World Theatre Day, celebrated on March 27, the show chosen for this special day is BILOXI BLUES* (by Neil Simon, directed by Ovidiu Caița) - which will be performed on Thursday, March 27, at 7 pm at the Great Hall.

On World Theatre Day, the International Message was formulated by Brett Bailey. Brett Bailey is a South African playwright, director, installation artist and artistic director of THIRD WORLD BUNFIGHT. He has worked in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Haiti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the UK and Europe. His successful iconoclastic plays, which interrogate the dynamics of the post-colonial world, include BIG DADA, IPI ZOMBI?, iMUMBO JUMBO, medEia and ORFEUS. Among his installations are EXHIBITs A & B. His plays have been performed in Europe, Australia and Africa, and he has won numerous awards, including the Gold Medal for Set Design at the Prague Quadrennial (2007).

The National Campaign "Artists for Artists" is organized by UNITER, together with theaters in Bucharest and across the country, with the aim of raising funds for elderly artists with health problems.

Initiated and organized since 2002, the National Campaign "Artists for Artists" is a stimulator of guild solidarity, a financial resource for elderly artists with health problems, and a signal to the public and authorities regarding their situation and their dignity.

Every year, UNITER, together with important artists and theatrical institutions, and partners who have joined this program, has managed to make possible the National Campaign "Artists for Artists" through which the necessary funds are raised to support elderly artists from all over the country. The funds raised by theaters from ticket sales are directed to a specially established fund - the Theater Solidarity Fund.

*Located on the fragile border between comic and tragic, the play "Biloxi Blues" is the second artistic act of the "Eugene Trilogy" ("Brighton Beach Memoirs", "Biloxi Blues" and "Broadway Bound") written by Neil Simon around the same central character - Eugene Morris Jerome and following different stages of his maturation and entry into the world, through often conflicting relationships in the family, in the army, in love.

United States of America, 1943, World War II. Before fighting Germany or Japan, the group of recruits including Eugene is sent to Biloxi, Mississippi, where they face their first formidable opponent, Sergeant Toomey, responsible for their training. The cruelty, malice and vulgarity of the sergeant contradict all logic and common sense, dehumanize the soldiers and gradually annihilate their personalities. The relationships within the group of recruits are not the most harmonious either. Life pushed to the limit of bearability and the differences in class, religion or education between them lead to harassment, to smoldering or open conflicts, in which dreams and dignity are simply trampled underfoot.
