A Winter Night's Dream
Comedy in three acts by Tudor Muşatescu
Artistic direction: Valeriu Grama
Scenography: Maria Haţeganu
Incidental music: Mişu Dragoi
Premiere date: March 5, 1966
Through an intertextual game, Tudor Muşatescu takes over the title of the famous Shakespearean play, to outline a captivating and idealized love story. „A Winter’s Night’s Dream” is the dream of a poor young girl, Maria (nicknamed Doruleţ), a saleswoman at a jewelry store. The value of the play lies in Maria’s human realization, in her desire to escape from the daily monotony of a barely secure existence. This ascension would be equivalent to spiritual liberation for her. Maria’s spiritual process is doubled by the dream of the writer Alexandru Manea. Tired of the life he leads, of his relationships with the „big world”, Manea has, through Maria, the revelation of true, authentic life, based not on interest, but on sincere and mutual love. At the end of the night and the play, the dreamlike visions of the characters „die” to be born in reality, as concrete fulfillments.
