Registrations open: DRAMATIC CREATION CONTEST FOR SHORT PLAYS

The Regina Maria Theatre is organizing the SHORT PLAY CREATION CONTEST between July 15 and August 15, 2020, which aims to encourage original Romanian dramaturgy, especially short theater. If until now the contest was part of the Short Theater Festival, this edition is a stand-alone event, and the proposed texts will be read and appreciated by a jury made up exclusively of actors from the Iosif Vulcan Troupe.

The organizers do not suggest a specific theme, leaving freedom of choice to the creators. However, the number of characters will also be part of the evaluation criteria for the plays. Thus, we encourage the submission of plays written for 1, 2 or 3 characters, in a single act, which have a maximum of 25 pages (approximately 50,000 characters without spaces). Dramatizations are not allowed, nor are plays that have already been published or performed. Texts submitted for the competition will not be returned to the authors.

The works will be sent to the address: Teatrul Regina Maria, Piața Ferdinand no. 6, code 410021, Oradea, Bihor county, with the mention: "For the dramatic creation contest - 2020 edition" by August 15, 2020 (postage date). Participants may propose multiple texts, provided that they comply with the above criteria. These must be sent in a single copy, unsigned, and the name and address of the sender will not be mentioned on the parcel. At the same time, a sealed envelope will be inserted in the parcel, which will contain the author's contact details (name, address and telephone number) and a motto that must also appear on the first page of the work, serving as an element of recognition. This envelope will be opened by the jury members only after the winner has been designated.

The results of the competition will be announced by the end of August and the first three texts selected by the jury members will be included in the repertoire of the Regina Maria Theatre, as reading performances, will be posted on the Facebook page and on the Regina Maria Theatre website and sent electronically to all theatres in the country, with special recommendations. This year, no cash prizes are awarded, but following the public vote and the recommendations of the Artistic Council, one of the three finalist texts will form the basis of a performance from the repertoire of the Iosif Vulcan Troupe.

EXPLOSIVE – February 2020 – Țiț Emanuela (liceuliuliumaniu.ro)

Text author: Prof. Țiț Emanuela
Taken from liceuliuliumaniu.ro

Undoubtedly, this period has made us long for our daily activities. We confess that we miss the theater. Today we write about our last outing to the theater.

„"Explosive" – a play dedicated to young people, teachers, parents. These were the words through which the play was presented to us. Curious, we decided to participate in this performance.

Surprise! We woke up at school again. What does the show Explosive present to us? Enthusiasms and reality. Our soul is a crushed glass of doubts and interrogations. The play is an invitation to stirring dialogues with ourselves. Willingly or unwillingly, during the show we end up asking ourselves sincere questions and, perhaps, even looking for an answer. It is not easy to find the strength to open your soul to those around you, but it is often very important. We are also reminded, through a dramatic episode, how important it is, for us in turn, to pay attention to our loved ones. To listen to them. To strive to perceive reality, to open our eyes wide in order to be able to analyze what is bad and what is good.

Theater and education in April

During this period when most activities that can be transferred to home are taking place online, including courses through the "Teleșcoala" project, the Regina Maria Theater supports teachers, students and parents in Bihor County through the "Theatre and Education" campaign.

Through this initiative, we want to make available to all students in Oradea and Bihor County, free of charge, most of the titles that are part of the Romanian Language and Literature curriculum - middle school and high school grades, and at the same time promote the importance of reading and the arts.

Art, in all its forms, brings us closer to each other, finds common ground between the most distant natures and mentalities, and teaches us to give others a chance, to be the other, to create a connection with characters who inspire or amaze us, and this gift it offers us is priceless.

With these motivations as the main driving force in our action to promote theater and education, the entire month of April is dedicated to literature. The actors of the Iosif Vulcan Troupe will film themselves reading literary works such as "The Wonderful Grove" by Mihail Sadoveanu, "Animal Farm" by George Orwell, "The Moromeții" by Marin Preda or "Iona" by Marin Sorescu. The films will be promoted on the Facebook page "Theatre and Education" and are intended exclusively for students, parents and teachers from Bihor County as support in the teaching and learning process for the capacity and baccalaureate exams.

Through the Bihor County School Inspectorate, the Regina Maria Theatre has created its own database with schools in Bihor County and parents, students or teachers of Romanian Language and Literature will be able to request access to the platform where these recordings will be uploaded, at the email address [email protected].

The materials that are part of the Theater and Education campaign are intended for free use by members of the target audience and may not be reproduced, distributed, transmitted or published without the written consent of the Regina Maria Theater. It is prohibited to copy, distribute, transmit, publish, reproduce, create derivative works from any information that is part of the Theater and Education campaign.

However, it is possible to download or copy specific materials available in this regard, which are intended exclusively for personal, non-commercial purposes. Their use for commercial purposes is prohibited.

The titles that you can find already published are:

• The Fountain Among the Poplars – Mihail Sadoveanu (Mirela Niță Lupu)
• Hagi Tudose – Barbu Șt. Delavrancea (Richard Balint)
• At Mânjola's Inn – IL Caragiale (Alexandru Rusu)
• The Story of Harap-Alb – Ion Creangă (Sebastian Lupu) – two parts

Premiere: Folklore Treasure – CRIȘANA Orchestra – 70 years

70 years old, an age that is not just here and there!

70 years ago and more, against the backdrop of the popular musical movement in the villages, the existence of a rich folkloric musical material, the existence of fiddler bands that provided the musical background for parties at the clubs, sittings, and village choirs, the Crișana Popular Orchestra appeared, which was the basis for the formation in 1998 of the Crișana Professional Artistic Ensemble.

The archives of the time provide evidence of the existence of the folk orchestra since 1948 when it operated alongside the Union of Artists' Union. Starting with 1950, the orchestra was included within the Oradea State Philharmonic and performed in cities and villages, in factories and plants, assuming the role of culturalizing the people, and at first it bore the name Danko Pișto.

THE REVIEWER: February 2020 – Mircea Morariu (amfiteatru.com)

Text author: Mircea Morariu
Taken from amphitheater.com

A new translation made from the perspective and in accordance with the intentions of the show (signed by Elvira Rîmbu), a director with a consistent, honorable and hopeful calling card, a director who, by the way, is not at his first encounter with Gogol's text (Petru Vutcărău), a spectacular, dynamic, energy-generating set, and numerous spaces that intelligently and efficiently value almost all the kinetic and expressive possibilities offered by the revolving stage (Adrian Damian), a set enriched by the remarkable contribution of light design (Bogdan Gheorghiu) and video creation (Ioana Ilaș-Badale), by a scenic movement that is itself efficiently elaborated, with a clear focus on spectacularity, a movement from which images are created in which realism merges or sublimates into the fantastic (András Lóránt), a large cast with a successful coordination of group moments, with several well-performed roles (Șerban Borda, Eugen Neag, Pavel Sîrghi), others who would have had the chance to be like this if their queen had been found and especially preserved (Răzvan Vicoveanu, Sebastian Lupu, Alexandru Rusu).

Actor Răzvan Vicoveanu nominated for the UNITER Awards for his role in the show CHRISTIANS

On Dragobete, the Regina Maria Theatre has two reasons to celebrate! Today the nominations for a new edition – the XXVIIIth – of the UNITER Awards were announced, and in the Best Supporting Actor category we find our colleague Răzvan Vicoveanu, with the role of Joshua in the show CHRISTIANS by Lucas Hnath, directed by Radu Iacoban.

The show Christians had its first performance in November and was staged at the Regina Maria Theater in its national premiere. The main role, that of Pastor Paul, is played by Richard Balint, last year’s winner of the UNITER award for “Best Supporting Actor”, with the role of Mr. Lockhart in the play “The Navigator” by Conor McPherson (directed by Cristian Juncu, a show by the National Theater Târgu Mureș – “Liviu Rebreanu” Company). Pastor Paul confesses to the parishioners who attend the church he leads that he has insecurities about several “truths of faith” and this confession arouses contradictory reactions among the listeners. The first to dare to confront him is Associate Pastor Joshua, played by Răzvan Vicoveanu, a young man beloved by both the church council and many of those present at the sermon that Sunday. Although in some aspects he denotes behavior that leads to extremes, Joshua made his way into people's hearts through the efforts he dedicated himself to the sick, the poor, and generally to all those who needed to be listened to or guided.

When, following a vote by those present, Joshua leaves the church, one of the council members, old Jay (played by Petre Ghimbășan), campaigns for his return, trying to remind Pastor Paul of the value of the young man he expelled:

"Joshua is, in a way, your spiritual son. You're the one who saved him. He came to this church alone and sought support, friends. If I remember correctly, he had been kicked out of his own home because of some... very serious problems. And I remember this boy coming here, approaching the altar and saying to us: I need something, I don't know exactly why, but I need that thing to help me move on. And that man came to every service. Every Sunday and then Sunday and Wednesday and then Friday and little by little, you gave him more and more responsibility in our church, a prayer at the Sunday service, a seat on the board, you let him read from the Bible, even a sermon, and then you named him associate pastor. And we all agree that he worked hard and deserved this place.”

Răzvan Vicoveanu's role is a complex one, with associate pastor Joshua gradually becoming known to the audience, and Răzvan manages to convey the character's emotions each time, in a natural way, and with each entry into the scene we see him transformed. At first he rebels, apparently exaggeratedly, causing a schism in the church that adopted him, turning against the very one who gave him the most credit: pastor Paul. However, we will later find out that the reasons why Joshua reacts this way are other than those we imagine. His life until entering pastor Paul's church led him to create barriers and strongly rooted beliefs, which serve to support him, and he has a visceral need for them. For him, questioning one of his fundamental beliefs is not at the level of philosophical curiosity, but strikes at the very foundation of his existence. At the end of the show, Joshua returns to Pastor Paul, trying to find a solution to the situation in the church and offers viewers some enlightening information:

“Your parents were Christians, and so were their parents. Your grandmother brought you to church for the first time, everyone wanted you to get saved, and you had nothing to lose by believing what you believed. But me. I lost everything. My parents didn’t believe what I believed. And I tried. I tried over and over to show them the way, to guide them toward God. That’s all I wanted, until the end. That’s what I tried.”

The fact that he failed to convert his parents and that his mother, on her deathbed, preferred to banish him rather than make a confession of faith, left an irreparable mark on Joshua. The memory of the moment when his mother died and seeing in her eyes the fear, horror and pain does not allow him to easily deal with the questioning of the existence of the afterlife as it has been preached until now.

Throughout the show, Associate Pastor Joshua manages to attract disapproval, revolt, sympathy, compassion and ultimately, even support from the audience at the expense of Pastor Paul. The effort made by Răzvan Vicoveanu to create a role with so many substrata is well distributed and rightly appreciated.

Congratulations Răzvan, congratulations to the entire team of the show "Creștini" and much success in the future!

Inspector

INSPECTOR

The play "The Inspector" is a satire, a comedy of morals and errors, which is part of the category of texts whose contemporaneity does not degrade over time; being a literary caricature of human defects, its relevance will cease with the disappearance of man... In the play "The Inspector" we have as protagonists the corrupt officials of a small Russian provincial town, led by the mayor, who receive disturbing news: an inspector will arrive incognito in their town to carry out some investigations. The clique's activities risk being discovered, thus, each of those involved assumes their own corrupt deeds and tries to rectify them as best they can. In the midst of organizing the cover-up, they receive the news that a suspicious individual has arrived at the inn, who presents the behavioral signs of an inspector...

The fourth premiere of the season: the comedy THE AUDITOR by NV Gogol

The Regina Maria Theatre announces the fourth premiere of the 2019/2020 season, The Inspector General by NV Gogol, directed by Petru Vutcărău. The premiere will take place on February 18 and 19, from 7:00 PM, at the Great Hall.

Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol is one of the great names of world literature, distinguished as a realist writer and satirist alike. Gogol was marked in his quest by the need to break away from routine and comfort and to rise above the status of "a living being who lives only for the sake of living". He uses the language of comedy to express the tragedy of his time, and Gogol's laughter was inspired by Pushkin himself, Gogol stating: "If we are going to laugh, then laugh loudly, let us laugh at what really deserves to be ridiculed by everyone." The anecdote that underlies the comedy "The Inspector" is also inspired by Pushkin, Gogol's mastery being to render a satirical image of synthesis of the entire bourgeoisie of imperial Russia, through a small group of officials from a provincial town. The corrupt officials, led by the mayor, receive disturbing news: an inspector will arrive incognito in their town to carry out some investigations. The clique's activities risk being discovered, so each of those involved assumes their own corrupt deeds and tries to rectify them as best they can. In the midst of organizing the cover-up, they receive the news that a suspicious individual has arrived at the inn, who presents the characteristics of an inspector...

The play "The Inspector General" belongs to the category of texts whose contemporaneity does not deteriorate over time. The first performance took place on the stage of the Alexandrinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, on April 19, 1836, and in 1842 an improved version appeared. In the almost two centuries since the premiere in St. Petersburg, the play has been staged hundreds of times and there have been versions for television, opera, dance and film. In Oradea, the show is mounted for the first time in the repertoire of the Iosif Vulcan troupe. The cast includes the following actors: Șerban Borda, Gabriela Codrea, Anca Sigmirean, Răzvan Vicoveanu, Alin Stanciu, Andrian Locovei, Alexandru Rusu, Sebastian Lupu, Sorin Ionescu, Pavel Sîrghi, Eugen Neag, Petre Ghimbășan, David Constantinescu, Lucia Rogoz, Ciprian Ciuciu, George Dometi, Carina Bunea, Maria Teișanu, Miruna Lazar, Giorgiana Coman, Calița Nantu, Daniela Purcărea, Ionuț Șerban, Igor Lungu. The show is directed by Petru Vutcărău.

An internationally renowned director, Petru Vutcărău has staged over a hundred shows both in the Republic of Moldova and in other countries such as: Italy, France, Romania, Russia, Japan or Turkey and has taught acting at various theater schools in France, Italy, Russia and Japan. He is an old friend of the theater in Oradea, since 1995, when he staged the shows "And what do we do with the cello" by Matei Vișniec and "Hey, good people" by William Saroyan, followed by "Women's Sex as a Battlefield in the Bosnian War" by Matei Vișniec, in 1999 and "Salon no. 6" by AP Chekhov and "Care pe care" by August Strinberg in 2006. He returns four years later, when he stages the play "The Murder of Gonzago" by Nedialko Yordanov. In 2018, when he began his work as artistic director at the Iosif Vulcan Troupe, he staged the show "Avalanșa" by Tuncer Cücenoğlu, which became one of the most appreciated productions of the season, winning an international award. The light design is by Gheorghiu Bogdan, the video creation is by Ioana Ilaș-Bodale, the choreography belongs to András Lóránt, the set design is by Adrian Damian, and the costumes are by Tatiana Popescu.

Spectators who want to see the premieres on February 18 and 19 still have very few tickets available. They are on sale at the theater's box office, on Vasile Alecsandri Street no. 8, or online at bilete.ro. Reservations can be made by calling: 0359 411 570.

A new award for the Avalanche show

The Regina Maria Theater in Oradea was honored with a new international award for the show Avalanșa, by Tuncer Cücenoğlu, directed by Petru Vutcărău. Thus, on February 3, the 6th edition of the Anadolu Theater Awards took place, with the Oradea theater receiving the Special Award in the International Theater section.

The awards were offered by Anadolu Theater Awards, the only organization in Turkey that also has an international identity. The award ceremony took place at The Water Performing Stage, part of the headquarters of Ziarul Teatral, an institution that burned down following an unfortunate accident in August 2019. The award ceremony thus also had a symbolic meaning, of the rebirth from the ashes of the prestigious institution, less than a year after the accident. The ceremony brought together artists from Romania, Germany and Azerbaijan, invited to the award ceremony. Along with the Special Award offered to Elvira Rîmbu, manager of the Regina Maria Theater, for the show Avalanșa, in the International Theater section the following awards were received: Professor Dr Dűsen Kaseinov – Túrksoy, Yes to Art International Award; Derman Atik -International Theater Award – Berlin/ Germany; Yalçın Baykul – International Theater Award – Berlin Germany; Ufuk Güldü International Theatre Award Berlin Germany.
