DAWN-WAY*

When you are put in a position to help your neighbor in distress, what do you do? Do you run away, hoping no one saw you, or do you stay and fight to save them?

Oleg Bogaev's play is based on a powerful oxymoron – light and darkness. "There are two paths that man can follow on earth: spiritual ascension or moral degradation." The people in the scenes imagined by the Russian playwright are harsh, sarcastic, not shy about showing their moral problems – a portrait of contemporary man, one might say – who asks himself questions, but neither offers nor seeks answers.

FASTING EVENING*

It's Christmas Eve, and an elf lands in a warehouse full of stolen toys. Gary, not entirely convinced of the intruder's identity, calls Simon, who also questions his friend's sanity. The two interrogate the intruder, who begs them to release him: because he's being held up from a job he needs to finish.

The play "Christmas Eve" is a fascinating tragicomedy, in which Gary and Simon, along with Gary's prostitute girlfriend Cherry, fight to discover what Christmas really means, who gets the last cowboy, and whether the dwarf dressed in an elf costume is, in fact, Santa's elf.

The world premiere of the show based on this play took place at The Red Room in London in December 1995.

LOVE

About love. About how wonderful love is in our dreams and about man's inability to love as he dreams of loving.

About longing, melancholy and the eternal feminine, in Eminescu's poetry.

A show with anthropomorphic signs and symbols through which we attribute human qualities and feelings to natural phenomena. The metaphor is always present in Eminescu's creation.

I dedicate this show to the wonderful woman, Eleonora Maria, my wife, who has been enduring all my "theatrical" infidelities with stoicism and rock-solid devotion since the last century.

And because you have not had the opportunity, until now, to see me in this position, I must confess to you that for me Theater is a syncretic art, but not kleptomaniac, that it appeals to all the arts, but does not grant any one a status of autonomy, that all the means it appeals to, in order to express itself, must be born and made, from the need for expression of the game, of the actor. I strive, by doing theater, to get as close as possible to the harmonies of music, because in the rigor of music there is more immediate poetry, than in all other arts. I refuse to appeal to modern means, such as film, projections, etc. Because I am a follower of the one who discovered that "for 2000 years, Theater has not been made, but a show". (Ioan Ieremia)

THE BRAWL TAILOR AND THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES

The show "The Brave Tailor and the Emperor's New Clothes" proposes a reinterpretation of the two stories, taking them out of the idyll of the classic fairy tales written by the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen, respectively. By interweaving the two stories and interpreting them in the key of "worldliness", the director creates a unified story for all ages, in which the tailor represents the clever man of the people, who is forced to manage with ingenuity in a superficial world where stupidity reigns.

The text underlying the show is adapted by Andrei Mihalache to be understandable to everyone, introducing musical fragments in places that make the show extremely attractive to the general public. The show "The Brave Tailor and the Emperor's New Clothes" is a humorous show that will amuse parents and children alike!

A HAPPY MAN FOR YEARS TO COME…

Queen Mary Theater is presenting the performance 'A HAPPY MAN FOR YEARS TO COME...' / "Pe-un om ferice ani in sir...", a selection of Michelangelo Buonarroti's poems while celebrating 450 years from his death.

Michelangelo Buonarroti was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, poet, and engineer of the High Renaissance who exerted an unparalleled influence on the development of Western art. Despite making few forays beyond the arts, his versatility in the disciplines he took up was of such a high order that he is often considered a contender for the title of the archetypal Renaissance man, along with his fellow Italian Leonardo da Vinci.

The feelings, the profound thoughts of Master Michelangelo found their expression, throughout his long existence, in a series of lyrical compositions and several letters addressed to family members and friends. Without being a literate by definition, and without having the intention of publishing the poems, Buonarroti left behind several lyrical compositions, inspired by Petrarca, as to conform to the laws of literature of that time.

In Queen Mary Theater's production, the viewers will have the chance to listen to Michelangelo's immortal lyrics, in the interpretation of actor Eugen Țugulea, with a special performance from actress Zentania Lupșe.

The little girl with matches

Adapted by Anghel Cîrstea, after HCAndersen

Artistic director: Eugen Ţugulea
Scenography: Ianis Vasilatos

Premiere date: 19.09.2010

The fascinating story of the cold north comes to life on the stage of the Oradea State Theatre in the play "The Little Match Girl" by Hans-Christian Andersen. The play depicts, in colorful images and songs, the adventures of the group of children formed around poor Christine, who can only dream of the gifts and goodies that the other children enjoy on the magical New Year's night. The fairy-tale inserts are evident in the second part of the show, when, through the flame of the matches she was supposed to sell, Christine sees as if in a dream a table laden with food in the midst of a party, a bright Christmas tree, a doll and her rich friend, Cathlen. In reality, although different in education and social rank, the children understand the meaning of solidarity, overcome the adversities of fate and even death, demonstrating that humanity and love are the most precious qualities. The play's director, Eugen Ţugulea, aims to stimulate the human side of the little spectators through the emotion of the story and sow the seed that will bear fruit later: the idea that above all, man must be man.

The last train

Play in three acts, a prologue and an epilogue by Eugen Mirea and György Kovács

Artistic director: Dan Alecsandrescu
Decor: Valeriu Moisescu
Costumes: Eliza Popescu
Premiere date: March 31, 1961

Apparently related in theme to the famous Shakespearean creation "Romeo and Juliet", the play "The Last Train" discusses the issue of chauvinism and the ways of ethnic coexistence in Romania. Tiberiu Vlad, Apáthy Aladár and the widow Szabó Elisabeta, convinced nationalists, maintain through deeds and attitudes the tension, the harmful hatred between their families, different primarily by their ethnic affiliation. The love of the young Szabó Imre and Claudia Vlad, inexperienced, innocent and impressionable, will painfully collide with this wall of non-communication.

"The Last Train" becomes a metaphor for this life-destroying attitude, which will necessarily be replaced by a new mentality, by the conviction that ethnic harmony can and will become a reality.

Trial for the shadow of a donkey

Comedy in two parts by Friedrich Dürrenmatt
Translation: Aneta Dobre

Artistic direction and set design: Cristian Ioan
Costumes: Doina Antemir
Premiere date: February 20, 1997

Set in classical Greek antiquity, the play "The Trial for the Shadow of a Donkey" unequivocally demonstrates that human weaknesses remain current at all times, materializing through "the alteration of interhuman relations due to either stupidity, or rapacity, or ambition, or the alienation of personality in a certain social context. The whole mess caused by the fact that a person [the dentist Struthion] who rented a donkey took advantage of its shadow to protect himself from the heat, thus provoking the wrath of the owner [Antrax] - who addressed the justice claiming that he rented only the animal, not its shadow - is transformed into a living tableau, of an absurd nature, made in violent strokes. The diversion of the initial pretext towards other interests is well followed, until the dispute converts into a huge advertising campaign, with commercial, but especially political objectives, the lawyers [Phisignata and Polyphonos] of the two parties involved in the process, becoming the leaders of two competing parties: the party of shadows and the party of donkeys. The grotesque insinuates itself from the first confrontations, from the similar way in which each side shouts that they want justice, but each understands something completely different by this justice, and it is amplified as the interval between form and substance increases, as meanings are diverted, as logic folds in front of the offensive of the absurd.” (Dumitru Chirilă in “Familia”, no. 3/1997). Since none of the camps gives in, the conflict heads towards a predictable outcome – war – but a war from which no one emerges victorious, on the contrary, a huge fire destroys the entire city, “over the comedy of poor human passions the ashes of total destruction are spread” (Pașcu Balaci in “Crișana”, March 13, 1997). In the end, the donkey himself comes out on top, rhetorically asking: "After everything that's happened here, who's the donkey?", proving to be the most lucid and sensitive character to the series of aberrations that happened because of, but not out of his will.

The Lovers of Ancona

Musical comedy for all tastes
Adapted by Katalin Vajda, after Péter Valló

Artistic director: Andrei Mihalache
Set and costume designer: Amalia Judea
Musical preparation: Dorin Griguţă
Choreography: Gabriela Tanase
Premiere date: 15.04.2011

"The Lovers from Ancona" is a comedy of situations, in which nothing that seems obvious is real. The play is actually a musical comedy, the songs being chosen from the repertoire of the '60s, '70s. All the heroes know how to sing, proving once again, if ever there was a case, that Italians are romantic and passionate.

The action takes place in the small Italian town of Ancona, in an old square, where the close proximity of the houses and the volcanic Latin blood make it impossible to keep secrets. The most important man in the town is the wealthy Tomao Nicomaco, a widowed Don Juan in his last youth.

The great magic

by Eduardo De Filippo
Translation: Horia Gârbea

Artistic direction: Alexandru Colpacci
Scenography: Vioara Bara
Musical illustration: Delia Şerban
With the participation of illusionist Eduard Maliţa
Premiere date: 06.02.2011

The song "La Grande Magia" takes us into the world of illusion, a confusing game in which reality loses its ordering meaning, acquiring new and multiple valences.

In the Hotel Metropol on the Italian Riviera, Otto Marvuglio, a traveling magician, performs a trick by which Marta, the wife of Calogero di Spelta, disappears without a trace. In reality, Marta takes advantage of this stratagem to run away with her lover to Venice, and the magician will cover up the adultery by hiding the reality under the guise of illusion. What is left for the deceived husband to do? Accept the truth or be convinced that his wife is really the victim of magic and that at some point she will return, unchanged?

"With "La Grande Magia" I wanted to say that life is a game and that this game needs to be supported by illusion, which, in turn, must be fueled by faith; I also wanted to say that each destiny intertwines with the thread of other destinies in an eternal game: a great game of which we are only allowed to discover some insignificant details." Double booking (Amor with repetition)

by Ray Cooney, John Chapman
Translation: Marinela Ioan

Artistic direction: Cristian Ioan
Decorations: Violin Bar
Costumes: Amalia Judea
Premiere date: 19.11.2010

English playwright Ray Cooney was born in 1932 and made his acting debut almost by accident at the age of 14. After working in several companies, he joined Brian Rix's company at the Whitehall Theatre in 1956, performing in more than 200 plays over the course of five years. His stage experience taught him the craft of dramaturgy, and his first play, written in 1961 in collaboration with Tony Hilton, was an immediate success. In 1983, Ray Cooney founded the Comedy Theatre Company, which produced over 20 plays during his artistic directorship. In 2005, he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of his services to the development of English theatre.

English actor, playwright and screenwriter, John Chapman (1927-2001) was one of the most active and skilled exponents of the post-war farce. He began his acting studies at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, which he left after two years, discouraged by his speech technique teacher. However, luck smiled on him and on the very day he left the Academy, he received a role in a show produced by Brian Rix, the first in the Whitehall Theatre's farce series. Two of the productions of this series – "Dry Rot" and "Simple Spymen" – were written by John Chapman himself and were a formidable success, each having over 1400 performances. He is the author of numerous plays and television scripts, written by himself or in collaboration with other famous names in the field, such as Dave Freeman, Anthony Marriott, Jeremy Lloyd, Eric Merriman.

John Chapman's collaboration with Ray Cooney produced four highly successful songs: "Not Now Darling" (1968), "Move Over Mrs Markham" (1971), "My Giddy Aunt" (1968) and "There Goes the Bride" (1974).

"Double Reservation" or "Amor cu repetiţie" is one of the successful plays of the two authors. It is also the turn of the Romanian audience to have a lot of fun watching this play. And the fact that the premiere takes place in Oradea, and the characters are played by the actors of the "Iosif Vulcan" theater troupe can only make us happy. This show means characters involved in more special relationships. The meeting point – the same apartment, the same hour. What happens next? Double Reservation is a comedy in two acts full of suspense, complications, deceptions and risky situations.

The Wizard of Oz

Screenplay (after L. Frank Baum), artistic direction and set design: Dan Mirea
Premiere date: 07.11.2010

One of the most famous and beloved stories by children, "The Wizard of Oz" has managed to seduce entire generations of children over time.

Written at the beginning of the century, more precisely in 1900, "The Wizard of Oz" has become an immortal story over time, being considered, in fact, the first modern American fairy tale. The adventures of Dorothy - a little girl from Kansas, thrown by a tornado into unknown lands, along with a whole host of characters - the Straw Man, the Tin Man, the Lion and Toto, the dog - are famous throughout the world, having known numerous dramatizations and screen adaptations. Although more than 100 years have passed since the release of this book, children around the world are still fascinated by the wonderful world of Oz.

The story will tell how one day Dorothy, caught by surprise by a tornado and carried away with her dog Toto, arrives in the distant land of Oz. Here, they meet the people of Oz. Also here, Dorothy meets the Straw Man, the man made of straw, as his name suggests, who wishes to have a little brain, the Cowardly Lion, who wants to become a brave lion like all the other lions, and the Tin Man who would also like a heart in his chest, like normal people have.

The only chance the protagonists of the story have to fulfill their wishes is to meet the Wizard of Oz. Only he has the power to help them. Thus begins their journey to the Emerald City. This proves to be a very difficult one, as the friends have to go through several trials. After a long and exhausting journey they reach the wizard, but he does not want to fulfill their wishes so easily, but they have to overcome several obstacles.
