RICHARD III – A way to blue or Majerian checkmate for the hourglass of the Wars of the Roses: "RICHARD III". My kingdom for a handful of blue sand. In Oradea.

A handful of sand for the wide and patient hourglass of the chess games of history that quickly pours another handful of sand on top, sometimes measuring the greatness of the pieces not so much by their importance as by their resistance on the game board at the bottom of the hourglass. This time of a blue fool.

And not just any kind of madman, but an excellently contrived one (Petre Ghimbășan, a sensational Richard III) and brilliantly handled by director Andrei Măjeri together with the "Iosif Vulcan" Troupe of the "Regina Maria" Theatre in Oradea, which holds in classical/contemporary theatrical chess, for more than two hours, the ten most important pieces of power (to which the director has very inspiredly reduced the crowded royal Shakespearean universe with all kinds of ranks and relationships at the Court and dispatched it in a superb neo-medieval-rock - some medieval costumes are reinterpreted contemporarily at the bottom, in black and white with elements of silver armor, British royal symbolism, accessorized with elements of sports equipment, prints and headphones (!) - essentialized and intelligible) for which he even temporarily invented new moves on the game board.

Prologue

"Chronicle". With this word it begins Richard III staged by Andrei Măjeri at the Regina Maria Theater in Oradea (premiere April 5, 2025). Richard III by William Shakespeare, translated by Horia Gîrbea, with inserts from Henry VI by the same William Shakespeare. For greater precision, with insertions of Henry VI Part III, the text which, together with the first two parts of Henry VI and with Richard III, form the so-called Minor Tetralogy of Shakespeare. A set of 4 texts dedicated to the Wars of the Roses (1455-1485), fought between the House of Lancaster (the red rose) and the House of York (the white rose, so to speak).

FREDERICK THE MOUSE – I KNOW WHO I AM

"Frederick the Mouse" - a show about childhood dreams and the courage to be yourself!

In a fast-paced, pragmatic world, little mouse Frederick seems… different. While others are stockpiling supplies for the winter, he gathers sunshine, colors, and words. It doesn't seem useful, it doesn't seem "productive" – but when the cold and silence descend on their hideout, his very dream becomes food for the soul.

Frederick is not just a dreamy mouse, but a mirror of the child in us – that child who dreamed, felt deeply, saw beauty in the smallest things and dared to be different. Our show tells Frederick's story from a sensitive and contemporary perspective, adding original moments, dialogue with the audience and thought-provoking questions:

  • Who were we before we were told who we “should” be?
  • What did we love to do, but forgot along the way?

Through puppetry, play, music and humor, the show invites children and adults on a journey of discovery. It is a show that offers not just a story, but an experience – one that reconnects us with our authentic selves and reminds us of how valuable it is to follow your dream, even if others don’t understand it.

ELIF AND THE RAIN – Suitcases and sounds of water through pipes

The premiere of the end of the year 2024 at the Regina Maria Theater in Oradea: Elif and the rain by Sami Ibrahim, directed by Alex Ianăși. A text about the condition of the always "illegal" immigrant, who is only worth as much as he can work, in a perfidious bureaucratic system. Elif is a woman who ends up in an economic dictatorship, preferring utopian tendencies that distance her from the fangs of reality. Her daughter, Lily, has a different perspective, beyond her mother's stories, managing to understand the cruel truth and their precarious condition, with a cynicism specific to her age.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD RO/HU

Little Red Riding Hood in Romanian and Hungarian within the project THEATRE AND PLAYING #ÎMPREUNĂ/EGYÜTT

On Friday, March 21, 2025, at the Arcadia Hall, the first activity within the project took place. THEATRE AND PLAY # TOGETHER/EGYPT, an artistic and educational initiative that aims to bring children from the Romanian and Hungarian communities in Oradea closer together, through theater and collaborative games.

The opening event was marked by a very special show: RED RIDING, a bilingual performance produced in collaboration with Arcadia Crew of the Queen Maria Theatre and The Lilliput Band of the Szigligeti Theatre. Starting from the performances already existing in the repertoire of the two companies, this new artistic form was conceived as a celebration of friendship, diversity and the stories that unite us.

RICHARD III

"This text is a manual on the rise of dictatorship in society, meticulously exemplifying the tropes of tyranny, a landscape play about dictators disguised as saviors. Richard, a prodigious criminal, narcissistic and violent, unleashes a mechanism of terror. Thus, the non-hero becomes, for a time, a leader. As now, perhaps in a hundred or a thousand years, Richard will continue to appear before the spectators, explaining to them step by step the forms of corruption in their own reality. And the spectators will watch with bated breath all the facts they have been warned about and will do nothing. They will promise themselves, perhaps, that the slippages they are experiencing will not be repeated. This is why we chose to imagine a scenic universe with no temporal definition.

ELIF AND THE RAIN – With the right

I'll say it from the very beginning. Elif and the Rain from the Theater Queen Mary from Oradea, is far from a flawless show. Not everything we see on stage is perfectly valid and not absolutely original. There are obvious borrowings in the grammar of the staging both in terms of the directorial solutions related to the theme, the construction of the characters themselves (whose first appearances, with large, immense suitcases, cannot help but remind you of Silviu Purcărete's shows) and in terms of the sets and costumes, also from the same area. They are signed by Tania Gobejishvili. The frequent use of classic microphones, with stands, used to highlight dramatic situations or lines considered essential is not something very new either. The fashion, introduced into Romanian theater some time ago by Radu Afrim in his shows, has proliferated and is present in a consistent, perhaps even too consistent, number of productions.

AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE – Almost a franchise

In 2014, when in the offer of performances of an edition of the International Theatre Festival Interferences, organized by the Hungarian State Theatre in Cluj-Napoca and its director, Tompa Gábor, the show with the play appeared An enemy of the people by Henrik Ibsen, the name of German director Thomas Ostermeier was not at all unknown to the Romanian public.

Something was also known about Nora, and about HamletThe latter came to us on the occasion of an edition of the Festival Shakespeare  created by Emil Boroghină at the National Theatre Marin Sorescu from Craiova. It was also known that Ostermeier was passionate about Ibsen's dramatic literature. Which he staged in its entirety and to which he dedicated substantial pages in his book Theater and fear which would also appear in Romanian in 2016, in the collection Yorick  of Bucharest publishing houses NemiraThe 2024 reissue of the book would be complemented by the appearance of two other books dedicated to the director from Schaubühne, one that also appeared at Nemira  (Thomas Ostermeier's Theater), the other (Backstage Ostermeier) at the Cultural Foundation Camil PetrescuAlso in 2024, Ostermeier staged on the stage of the National Theatre IL Caragiale the play show Hedda Gabler.

HOPE NEVER GOES UP IN THE ELEVATOR

"Hope Never Goes Up in the Elevator" brings to light a conflict that has become more acute in the context of today's world: that between the old world vs. the new world.
A single, elderly woman is placed in the care of two androids, specially programmed for this mission. However, the androids, at first, cannot fully understand the woman's needs, because their thinking is analytical and they cannot perceive the emotions and spiritual needs of their subject.
However, in the end, everyone benefits from this confrontation and there seems to be a trace of reconciliation between the two worlds.

On the occasion of National Culture Day, the Regina Maria Theater in Oradea is preparing a series of special events dedicated to celebrating Romanian cultural heritage. On Wednesday, January 15, the entire Bihor community is invited to participate in a series of activities that will bring to the fore both literary traditions and the importance of culture in our daily lives. From poetry performances and recitals dedicated to the great classics of Romanian literature, to interactive meetings with contemporary authors, the proposed program will respond to a wide spectrum of tastes and interests. Each event will be an opportunity to reflect on the role of culture in the formation of our national identity and to rediscover the beauty of the Romanian word.

ELIF AND THE RAIN

Statistics say that the main cause of migration is generated by socio-political factors: persecution, war, conflicts. Elif flees at a young age from terror and threat, hoping to find a place where she can regain her right to exist, the fundamental right to be human.

But the mirage of freedom gradually turns into a struggle for validation, and she discovers how fragile the border between freedom and oppression is. The balance tips from political to economic dictatorship, and her fight for survival is gradually swallowed up by a Kafkaesque immigration system.

The fragile salvation lies in mythical thinking and the power of stories, like Scheherazade, but cynicism and cruelty throw the cruel weight of reality into her story, especially when she is put in the position of protecting her daughter.

"Elif and the Rain" is a contemporary fable about perseverance, the fight for justice and integration into an absurd bureaucratic system, but also about family, about the bond between an emigrant mother and her daughter born in the borrowed country, who live two different experiences of the same story. 

The text seems necessary to me precisely because we live in a society in which individualism is the main ethical imperative, in which the Other has no value except to the extent that it can represent a means to achieve profit. I chose this text because it presents the immigrant's condition from two perspectives. The personal, human one, of the fears, of the torture given by this situation in which it is < > to exist in a place, of love, of searching for a < >, of the ways in which Elif colors this alienating existence. And the other, which is the political perspective, of man who is only worth as much as he can produce. Of man as a tool of labor and nothing more. And especially, of a bureaucratic system built to ensure that someone like Elif will never be able to obtain the rights necessary to overcome the condition of a simple tool of labor, will never be able to live as a human being. The Iosif Vulcan troupe of the Regina Maria Theater is preparing for the premiere of the show "Elif and the Rain" by Sami Ibrahim, directed by Alex Ianăși, scheduled for December 21 and 22, from 7:00 PM, at the Transilvania Hall.

Sami Ibrahim is a young London writer with a rising career, having already been nominated for Awards Olivier and receiving an award for political theater in 2019. Sami Ibrahim addresses themes in his texts that raise questions about pressing contemporary socio-political issues, questioning the social system that we have created and which sometimes turns against us, especially when we encounter Other.
